Advent Day 22
Today we will consider multiple texts. Is is important for us to understand that when we read the Bible we see Biblical characters whom are familiar with earlier writings. For example, in the book of Luke a common Christmas passage occurs in the opening chapters. In one account John the Baptist’s father Zechariah is quoted in song. Revealed within this song is a man who knows God through His Word and is excited about the coming provision through the birth of a Messiah.
Zechariah’s uses a descriptive term from the Old Testament in referencing the works of God during the days prior to Jesus’ birth. He states that “He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David” (Luke 1:69). Today’s suggested text from both the Old and New Testament considers this terminology used by Zechariah.
In the Old Testament the “horn” is a symbol of might. As you read today, I challenge you to think about the “horns” in your life. What are the horns or symbols of might in your life? What are the things you find comfort, satisfaction, and security in? As we consider the work of God through the birth of His Son let us ask Him to continue to aid us in finding our ultimate “horn” in Christ.
“68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people 69and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,”
Luke 1:69
“3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.”
2 Samuel 22:3
“2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 18:2
