Matthew 7:1-6, Luke 6:37-42

1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

Matthew 7:1-6

37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

39He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Luke 6:37-42

There are a number of take away points of application from this account from Christ’s teaching.  I challenge you to focus on these two accounts of Christ from two different authors.  Notice that Matthew’s account is much more succinct than Luke’s.  Luke provides more details that a Jewish audience would have assumed.  For example in verse 40 Luke provides a brief explanation of discipleship under the leadership of a Rabbi.

I bring these points to attention to relay this reality.  God’s Word is providentially woven into human history.  Many may try to claim any number of inaccuracies of the Bible.  Intellectually one must consider just how the Bible came to be and now is available for us to view.  It is my hope that through clear parallel passages just as these you can see how different men writing from different perspectives account with pin point accuracy accounts of our Lord.

If we therefore understand the text to be absolute trusty worthy and true then we can begin to learn and adhere to Christ’s provision for our wrong and the free help He offers us every moment of life in Himself.  Help from not only our past grievances but also help in the days to come.
