Matthew 5:3-12, Luke 6:20-26

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matthew 5:3-12

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry.

“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

Luke 6:20-26

Repetition helps me.  My mind tends to dart and wander and when I am learning if I can see a pattern in the material I am studying it aids me in retaining information.  In this passage Jesus’ teaching is clear.  As you read I encourage you to distinguish “blessed” verses “woe”. Consider if what Jesus defines as blessed is what you define as blessed. In comparison, consider if what Jesus defines as a woe is what you would negatively consider also.  Few passages from Christ and His teaching are as clear as these in understand the world through the eyes, mind, and truth of Christ.
